Ask for “No”, don’t ask for “Yes”

Often times, as software engineers, we see gaps, needs, or issues that we would like to resolve. These may not be part of our normal duties, so we will go to our manager and ask if we can work on a solution. Unfortunately, this often results in not getting the task we are asking for.

Dan Moore explains in this article how the way we approach our manager can lead to getting a better outcome. Instead of asking for permission (asking for a “yes”), explain the situation and how and when you intend to solve it, giving them the opportunity to tell you “no”.

…pursue this approach for problems you feel are in the scope of your role but that you want to inform the boss about. It’s great when you want to offer a chance for feedback, but you are confident enough in the course of action that you don’t need feedback.
